Five days before the season last year the EAGLES made a blockbuster trade sending Sam Bradford to Minnesota. This put 1st round pick Carson Wentz as starter day one. “I was shocked when I heard Sam was traded, but at the same time excited about the opportunity!”
It was a typical rookie season for Carson as there were some good, bad and ugly moments in a 7 win season. However there was a lot of learning. Learning that has continued into this, his second season. As evident by the week two lesson against this weeks opponent the NY Giants.
Carson who was able to get a full OTA under his belt as well as 1st string snaps throughout the preseason started out hot week one against AFC powerhouse Denver Broncos and you can sense his confidence rising even more when Carson hooked up with Jordan Matthews for an early 7-0 lead against NY… unfortunately things quickly turned south for Carson and the Birds as they were embarrassed 50-14. Carson finished the day 14-34 for 293 yards 2 TD and 5 INT!!
Coach Johnson said “It was definitely good for Carson and the team to get their lip bloodied, people asked why I left him out there and why didn’t I run more in the second half…” “… it first off brought us back down to earth we had some guys sniffing themselves as if we arrived because off our week 1 road win against Denver. Guys didn’t take time to prepare in practice before the GIANTS game and they thumped us! Now, the fact that they elected to score 50 and continually pass… well that won’t be forgotten. But they have been the standard over the last few years… our guys now see what it will take to get to the top” “We are definitely looking forward to Sunday night”
Since that week two beat down the Birds have rattled off 6 straight and are 7-1 second into the NFC East but have the third overall best record in the league. The learning haven’t stopped for Carson however, as he was criticized for doing promos for the Sunday night match up before week 9 game against the pesky Chiefs and subsequently threw 3 first half INT ! Fortunately Carson settled and threw for almost 400 yards and 2 TD in a 17-16 comeback win last week.
“Yea, one game at a time!”Wentz says “We preach that in our locker room. NBC wanted to do some TV spots I didn’t think much of it at the time but it pulled me away for a day, mistake! That won’t happen again especially this week. NY does a great job capitalizing on mistakes, so I have to be smart and make good reads. It’s great to be home our fans are excited as are we …. it should be another great test!”
